« The pilgrimage of parishioners of St Nicholas church in Oxford to the church and the source of St Frideswide »
On Sunday 31st October 2021 a group from the parish of St Nicholas in Oxford made a pilgrimage to the holy well and church of St Frideswide in the village of Frilsham, near Newbury in Berkshire.
By tradition this is one of the places where the Saint his from Prince Algar of Leicester, who was trying to force her into marriage instead of continuing her monastic life. The holy well was a place where St Frideswide healed the sick through her prayers. The ancient church nearby is believed to be built on the place where she lived with her nuns until they returned to Oxford.
Following the blessing of the waters at the holy well, Vespers for the feast of St Frideswide (19 October/1st November) was served in the church, with the blessing of His Grace Bishop Matthew of Sourozh.
Many thanks to the Revd Dr Simon Thorn, the wardens and parishioners of St Frideswide’s Frilsham for their warm welcome and help in facilitating the pilgrimage.
