« Pilgrimage to the church of St. Boniface of Fulda on Isle of White »

On Saturday, July 16, 2022, the faithful of the parish of St. Silouan of Athos in Southampton, together with pilgrims from far abroad, made a pilgrimage to the ancient church of the Hieromartyr St. Boniface of Fulda, in the baptism of Winfried (672-675 - 754), Archbishop of Mainz, Dokkum, Crediton, Apostle of Germany, in Bonchurch on the Isle of Wight.

The church, which dates back to the 11th century, was built by monks from Normandy on the site of an earlier Saxon church. 

With the blessing of His Grace Bishop Matthew of Sourozh, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated by the Dean of the Diocesan District of the South West of England, Archpriest Joseph Skinner, co-served by Deacon Viktor Nikiforov. 

Born at Crediton in the Kingdom of Wessex, now Devon, between 672 and 675, Saint Boniface was a monk of the great monastery of Nursling near Southampton, and became the Enlightener of the Germanic lands and archbishop of Mainz. His long life of service to the Gospel of Christ was crowned by martyrdom at Pentecost, in 754

 After the Liturgy, a common meal was held, after which the pilgrims were able to relax on the seashore.
