The Feast of St Frideswide, Abbess and Patron of the City and University of Oxford, was celebrated today with a special liturgy at the shrine of the Saint within Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, by kind permission of the Dean and Chapter.
With the blessing of His Grace, Bishop Matthew of Sourozh, the liturgy was presided at by His Beatitude, Metropolitan Jonah (Paffhausen), of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia. The metropolitan was assisted by Archimandrite Stefan Ponjarac (Rector, Serbian Orthodox Parish of the Ascension, Oxford), and Archpriest Stephen Platt (Rector, St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Parish, Oxford).
At the end of the liturgy, a magnification was sung before the icon and shrine of St Frideswide, and Metropolitan Jonah preached a sermon on the importance of spiritual vigilance, as exemplified in the life of the saint.
Fr Stephen thanked Metropolitan Jonah for leading the service and congratulated him on the tenth anniversary of his episcopal consecration, which he was celebrating. In memory of his visit, and to mark his anniversary, Fr Stephen presented His Beatitude with an icon of Oxford’s patron saint.
